This dukkah was created in collaboration with Shawnah Cady, aka MadB, a Djabugandji and Kaurareg person, iconic Canberran drag queen, and fierce advocate for Indigenous LGBTQIASB+ communities. As Queer Food was taking shape, we connected to create something special for Shawnah and Rob’s wedding, using native ingredients. What began as a deeply personal blend became our very first retail product online, and continues to hold a special place in our hearts, with Shawnah’s ongoing support since the beginning.

Fragrant lemon myrtle and lemon aspen bring a bright, citrusy lift, layered through toasted nuts and seeds for richness, crunch, and depth. It’s bold, grounding, and a little bit magical, just like MadB.

Sprinkle over warm bread with oil, avocado on toast, roasted vegetables, salads, or your protein of choice for a hit of flavour and story.

    THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

    Mama MadB’s Majikal Aussie Dukkah

Shawnah Cady, also known as MadB, is a Djabugandji and Kaurareg person and a beloved Canberra drag performer, activist, and Queer* elder. They began their drag career in 2017 following public debate and protests in support of the Safe Schools education program. During one of these protests, while dressed in drag, someone called them “Crystal Balls”, a name Shawnah proudly claimed and performed under for two years before changing to their current name, lovingly given to them by their children.

In 2024, Shawnah also founded Rainbow Mob ACT, a community initiative supporting LGBTQIASB+ young people, with a strong focus on creating safer, more affirming spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander queer and trans youth.

Even before we formally launched Queer Food, Shawnah asked if we could create a dukkah for their wedding, featuring lemon myrtle and lemon aspen from their home in Far North Queensland. It has been an honour to create this product with Shawnah, and now we’re proud to share it with everyone too.

Shawnah continues to perform today as MadB, and if you would like them to host your next event, you can find them on Instagram at @madbdiva.
